FAQs

How old do kids need to be for a lesson?

For our junior lessons, we require kids to be at least 8 years old as there will be hooks and other hazards. For semi-private lessons, where a parent or guardian is present, kids should be at least 6 year old. Kids can be any age for a family lesson, and we will do our best to give the younger kids age appropriate tasks and equipment.

Do parents need to stay for a junior lesson?

Parents are welcome to stay and watch their child's lesson, but it is not required.

Do we need to bring anything?

All necessary equipment will be provided. However, we recommend bringing sunscreen, bug spray, hat and water.

Will a lesson be cancelled for bad weather?

The weather on Bald Head Island can be tricky during the summer. Lessons will only be canceled in the event of heavy persistent rain or lightning within 10 miles (we use a lightning tracker app). We always keep an eye on radar and will contact you if we feel like the lesson needs to be cancelled or the time needs to be modified. We will always do our best to reschedule if a lesson has to be cancelled, but will offer a full refund if this is not possible.

What happens if it starts to rain in the middle of a lesson?

Please know that we fish in the rain. If there is a heavy downpour, we will wait in a covered area for 15 minutes. If the rain has not stopped and looks like it will not subside, we will discuss options at that time if there are more than 75 minutes remaining in your lesson.

If there is lightning within 10 miles during a lesson, we will immediately leave the beach and, if it is a junior lesson, contact the phone number on file. We will not go back onto the beach until there have been no lighting strikes within 10 miles for 30 minutes. If there are more than 75 minutes remaining in your lesson, we will discuss our options for rescheduling.

What is the policy for lesson refunds?

A non-refundable 50% deposit will be collected at the time of booking. The remaining balance is due 72 hours before the lesson at which point that, too, is non-refundable. Refunds will only be issued if a lesson is canceled due to severe weather and no further rescheduling options are available. Please remember, if you cancel a scheduled lesson, not only are we losing out on a time that could have been booked, but another person or family is losing out on an opportunity to have a great time fishing!

Will we definitely catch fish?

Unfortunately, as good as we are at what we do, there is no guarantee that we will catch something. That being said, the fishing on Bald Head Island is some of the best in the country and skunking is rare (our track record of catching fish is about 98%). We will always do everything in our power to make sure that you catch something.

What type of fish will we catch?

Bald Head Island is home to some of the best saltwater fishing in North Carolina. Depending on the season and where you're fishing — surf, creeks, or inshore waters — you might catch:

  • Red Drum (Redfish) – A local favorite, especially inshore and in the surf.

  • Speckled Trout – Found in creeks and inshore areas, especially in fall and early spring.

  • Flounder – Great for backwater and creek fishing, often caught near docks and drop-offs.

  • Bluefish – Aggressive feeders often caught in the surf, especially in summer and fall.

  • Black Drum – Usually found near structure like oyster beds and docks.

  • Spanish Mackerel – Fast, flashy fish often caught from the beach in warmer months.

  • Sharks – Small blacktip and bonnethead sharks are common in the summer surf — exciting (and safe) for catch-and-release fun!

We’ll help you target the best species based on the time of year, tides, and your fishing location. Every lesson and Katchin’ Kit includes tips on what fish are biting — and how to catch them.

Can we keep the fish we catch?

We generally practice catch and release. We will occasionally keep small fish that are suitable for bait. For legal size fish that are good for eating (red drum, black drum, flounder, etc…), please speak to us before the lesson to make arrangements.

What skill level are the fishing lessons designed for?

Our lessons are designed to cater to individuals of all skill levels. For those with less experience, we begin with the fundamentals of fishing, ensuring a solid foundation. For more experienced anglers, we focus on deepening their understanding and skills specific to fishing on Bald Head Island, helping them to refine techniques and explore new methods.

Will there be other people at a lesson?

We may join junior and semi-private lessons together, but there will never be more than 4 total participants. If you prefer a more individualized experience and would like to have your own dedicated time with an instructor, the family lesson is 100% private, ensuring that you receive focused attention throughout your session.

What safety measures are in place during the fishing lesson?

Safety is our top priority at BHI Fishing Co. We will email you a copy of our BHI Fishing Lesson Code of Conduct when you book your lesson. At the beginning of each lesson, we will review the rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved. If a child is misbehaving or not adhering to safety guidelines, we will promptly inform the parents and if necessary, further actions will be taken in order to maintain the safety of the instructors and other participants. Our commitment to safety is unwavering, and we strive to create a positive atmosphere for all participants. If you would like to see a copy of our BHI Fishing Lesson Code of Conduct you can find it HERE.

Will you take photos at the lessons?

Yes! Not only will we take photos, but we will also text or email them to you after the lesson- they are great additions to any holiday card!

Do you post photos to social media?

Yes, we do use social media to promote and educate people about BHI Fishing Co. We never use a child’s name and will always do our best to get your permission before posting. If you do not want us to use your child’s photo, please let us know.

Do I need a fishing license?
